Calgary – Volte – a spectacular ceremony of heat, horses and hoofbeats. Volte – the brand of the new, breath-taking musical stage production that will amaze everyone who takes in the TransAlta Grandstand Show during the Calgary Stampede, July 8-17. This multi-million dollar production showcases a magnificent, never-before-seen equine extravaganza that includes two black stallions, 180 performers and hundreds of fireworks and fireworks effects.
“Volte is one of the most spectacular large-scale shows you’ll see anywhere,” says Bill Avery, Grandstand Show producer, Calgary Stampede. “The name Volte comes from the world of dressage meaning a very small circle used for controlling and releasing the special power of a horse. The idea of this show originates from the European legends of enchantment and valor combined with a sense of our own western lore.” Avery adds that Volte is being touted as the TransAlta Grandstand Show’s biggest spectacle in 43 years. With dancing horses, imaginary Elizabethan gardens and a 12-metre aluminum puppet, this might be Avery’s most ambition project yet.
The Young Canadians of the Calgary Stampede form the cornerstone of the TransAlta Grandstand Show this year. A group of about 180 young singers and dancers will perform with over 1,800 costume changes each night. The new original score of Volte is composed by Calgary’s own Emmy award winning musical director Dave Pierce whose compositions can be heard on Broadway, Las Vegas, Hollywood and throughout Canada.
Well-known Calgary personality Dave Kelly will be the host, guiding spectators on their 75-minute journey through the magical world of Volte. This epic spectacle takes audiences into a fantastic and suspenseful world where acrobatic feats are heightened by original live music and interactive multimedia elements. In true Stampede tradition, Volte will culminate each evening in an amazing fireworks display that includes 450 individual pyrotechnic effects.
“TransAlta believes in supporting the people and communities that have powered us for the past 100 years, and we are proud of our long-time partnership with the Calgary Stampede,” said Steve Snyder, President & CEO of TransAlta. “The talent, hard work and determination that goes into creating the TransAlta Grandstand show is another reflection of our company’s character.”
