It’s tough to top Ron Mathison’s success at the Calgary Stampede in Western Performance Equine Competitions.  Mathison is the recipient of the 2015 Calgary Stampede Elite Western Rider Award, an honour he’s now won three times since its creation in 2009. The Elite Western Rider Award is given annually to a competitor who excels in at least two of the Calgary Stampede’s three Western Performance Horse events.  Mathison, a well-known Calgary businessman and philanthropist, competed in all three events in 2015 and placed in the top 10 in two of them.

“It’s truly exceptional,” says Western Performance Horse committee chair, Angela Pipe, adding, “This is a true testament to the determined competitor and the accomplished horseman that Ron Mathison is.”

The Calgary Stampede Elite Western Rider Award was created in celebration of the three western performance horse events that take place during the ten days of Stampede:  the Calgary Stampede Cutting Horse competition, the Working Cow Horse Classic, and the Team Penning competition.  Each event continues the tradition of recognizing excellence in working cow horses with $500,000 in awards and prize money.

“This is our heritage at its best,” says Pipe, who leads a strong team of volunteers who work with the Stampede to put on the events.  She believes it’s extremely important to recognize this individual accomplishment. “To be able to award a custom buckle to one truly Elite Western Rider doesn’t just acknowledge their top ten placing in our events; it also recognizes their competitive spirit, passion for the events, commitment to their horse partners and the true grit it takes to win the award.  These are the elements the Calgary Stampede was built on.”

Ron Mathison won the Calgary Stampede’s Elite Western Rider Award in 2009, also winning again in 2013.  His 2015 award comes as a result of a second place finish in the 14 Class of Team Penning with teammates Dusty Wigmeyr and Christopher Thompson, as well as a fourth place finish in the Non-Pro Bridle category in Working Cow Horse riding BBR Mardi Gras Time.
