Calgary Opera joins Calgary Stampede’s Youth Campus

Calgary – The Calgary Stampede and Calgary Opera are proud to announce a unique partnership that will see the Calgary Opera move to the Calgary Stampede’s Youth Campus creating an energized and sought-after gathering place for performing arts training and performance for youth. Under the agreement, the Stampede will provide the land for the Calgary Opera to build a 50,000 square foot Opera Centre, which will include public space, a 300-seat rehearsal and performance space, classrooms, practice halls, administrative offices and much more.

“This partnership is another step in creating an enriched Youth Campus,” says Bob Thompson, president and chairman of the board, Calgary Stampede. “Developing youth through our programs has always been a large part of the Calgary Stampede. This new partnership will create synergies between youth and professional artists, providing them with a wide spectrum of resources to further their development.”

“We love this new partnership,” says Bob McPhee C.M., General Director and CEO Calgary Opera. “We believe this relationship has the potential to not only strengthen each organization but contribute massively to the social, artistic and cultural health of our community. Our commitment to the Stampede is that our new facility will be designed and built as a multi-purpose building to be shared with our Youth Campus partners and more than 160 plus community organizations who currently use space at the Arrata Opera Centre.  Indeed, the days of single-purpose built facilities are over; partnerships are the way of the future.”

The new Opera Centre will enrich Youth Campus with 70 per cent of the Centre’s space being used as shared space servicing more than 160 community organizations. In addition, the Opera Centre will nurture and enhance a thriving arts scene in Calgary and provide access to a wide-variety of arts disciplines.

The Calgary Opera is a strongly governed and fiscally sound and artistically vibrant organization with an incredible reputation as a cultural and community trailblazer. The Opera is currently in the planning and execution phase of a fund development campaign and have has already secured commitments valuing $4.5 million, including a naming donor.

Youth Campus will provide young people with a vital creative area focused on developing strong western cultural roots through education and the performing arts. Located on the banks of the Elbow River, across from ENMAX Park, this best-practice campus will feature ample green space and be custom-designed for indoor and outdoor classrooms, training and performing.
