Calgary – After an exciting, action-packed night, the Calgary Stampede is pleased to announce the results of the 2016 Canvas Auction, presented by GMC.

More than 180 groups and organizations came out to bid for the opportunity to advertise with the 36 drivers who will be competing in the 2016 GMC Rangeland Derby during the Calgary Stampede, July 8-17. The total auction proceeds this evening are $2,297,500.

“We are pleased so many amazing people in our community believe in the importance of supporting these drivers,” says Paul Rosenberg, chief operating officer, Calgary Stampede. “Even in challenging times, the cultural, historic and sporting significance of chuckwagon racing is being recognized - not only in our community, but throughout the province.”

Advertiser support helps the drivers offset the expense of caring for their horses and other annual racing costs. Many of the drivers rely on the money they bring in during the Stampede to support the rest of their racing season.

The luck of the Irish was with driver Kurt Bensmiller on this St. Patrick’s Day as he secured the top bid of $120,000 of the night from Tsuut’ina Nation and Grey Eagle Casino.

Other successful bidders include a strong mix of advertisers who have been a part of the action in the past, as well as a number of new groups who are getting in on the fun for the very first time.  New this year, the Calgary Stampede worked to facilitate partnerships among those who were looking to share the advertising opportunity with other like-minded groups. For interested parties, a select few of those opportunities may still be possible post-auction by teaming up with successful bidders. For more information, visit
