New advertiser surprises the crowd at 36th annual Canvas Auction

Calgary – Proving that the GMC Rangeland Derby Canvas Auction is still one of the best investments in Calgary, bidders laid down a whopping $3,542,500 at this year’s auction, held at the Boyce Theatre on Stampede Park – the fourth largest in the event’s 36-year history. Over 120 registered bidders took the time to express their confidence in the economy of Calgary and southern Alberta, including many new companies.

The 2013 GMC Rangeland Derby Champion Jason Glass proved to be the favourite choice amongst the 36 drivers, garnering a bid of $170,000 from MJ’s Water Hauling. This winning bid from MJ’s Water Hauling was the surprise of the night. The Strathmore-based company is a new advertiser this year that registered the day of the auction, and Glass had been supported by the same sponsor for the past 20 years, who lost out in the bidding.

“We came out last year and bid it up for Jason (Glass), but we bowed out just a little too early,” says Darren Bishop, owner and president of MJ’s Water Service, adding that he has sponsored Glass at the races in Strathmore. “This year we came in determined that we were going to succeed and we came ready to win the bid. We’re really looking forward to being at the Stampede with Jason’s team and building some great experiences around that.”

The second place driver in the auction, Kelly Sutherland, went for a healthy $145,000 by Tervita. Kurt Bensmiller picked up the third highest bid of the night, $140,000 from Tsuu T’sina Nation.

“This year was pretty-much right on par with last year, making it the fourth biggest total raised in the auction’s history,” said Dr. Gordon Atkins, chair of the Chuckwagon committee. “We’re particularly thrilled to see so many new companies with successful bids. It’s encouraging to see new companies coming to the Stampede and being part of the exclusive opportunities and experiences that come with being a canvas advertiser. This builds an entire new group of corporate supporters for chuckwagon drivers and the Stampede.”

This year, the average bid was a respectable $98,402.78.
