Sensitive Stomachs – You’ll have options at the Calgary Stampede

Calgary – The health-nut or allergen-conscious Stampede goer won’t be left out of the excitement of trying new delicacies on the Midway. Come and dine with the rest of your partners on delicious treats that are healthy or made without gluten, dairy or nuts. New vendors and local YYC Food Trucks will be mixing up delicious treats that will appeal to everyone’s taste buds.

“Food is an important component of any celebration,” says James Radke, operation manager, Midway. “This year we want to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the treats of the Midway at the Calgary Stampede and celebrate our Centennial.”

From savoury to sweet, individuals with gluten or wheat sensitivities can enjoy a range of creative delights that will knock your boots off. Savour the french fries from Fresh Cut Fries, a pineapple curry or spicy pad thai made with brown rice and no oil from Island Noodle Stir Fry, the Savage Lands salad from the Mighty Skillet or a Beef Bacon Sandwich with all the fixings – minus the bread of course.

Craving meat? Pork Chop on a Stick, Jumbo Turkey Legs, and BBQ Beef are all delicious treats, but you may have to forgo the sauce and bun. Eden concessions is offering a variety of German sausages and Second to None Meats has a range of pepperoni, jerky, hotdogs, smokies, elk and bison – all available to be served without a bun.

If you’re up for tasting some ethnic cuisine, venture over to Ace Curries To Go, Los Compadres, or the Naaco Truck.

All items at Ace Curries To Go are made without gluten and nuts; though, they may contain dairy. At Los Compadres all tortillas are made with corn and no nuts are used on any menu items. Delicious eats made without gluten include Steak Tacos, Pastor Tacos, Esquites - warm salad in a cup with a Mexican inspired dressing, Quesidillas and Huevos Rancheros. Cheese is optional for those with dairy restricted diets.

The Naaco Truck is offering up Naaco Bites, Bolly Chips and three different Naaco options, which can be made without gluten by serving with rice instead of naan. Naaco bites are delicious chicken sausages battered in corn and chickpea flour and then deep-fried to a golden crisp. The Naaco Bites are deep-fried in the same oil that the Smoresa’s – a samosa filled with s’more ingredients – are fried in, which for serious gluten & wheat allergies may pose an issue, but for those with a less serious allergy this may be an excellent option to get your deep-fried fix. Bolly Chips are shredded and fried mogo with smoked cheddar, chicken chorizo, and red cabbage, topped with yogurt and a whole grain mustard chutney served with a carrot and radish salad that is tossed in a lime and cilantro dressing. All menu items can be made without dairy by changing around chutneys and toppings, and switching the naan for rice, as the naan bread does include dairy and egg. The only nut Naaco Truck uses are sesame seeds.

To settle that sweet tooth, enjoy some ice cream from Mackay’s Ice Cream, fudge from Old Fashioned Fudge or candy from Candytimes. All items are made without gluten except for Guys Weadick’s Haystack ice cream and Oreo Cookie fudge.

All kitchens and vendors can’t guarantee that the food hasn’t come into contact with allergens, but they will try their best to accommodate all customers and reduce cross contamination.
