Calgary – Kelly Sutherland, 12 time Calgary Stampede Champion Chuckwagon Driver, is returning to the Stampede in 2018 – but this time as the celebrity judge for the Parade!
Sutherland has the honour of selecting the entry that he feels best exemplifies the spirit of the Calgary Stampede. The winning entry will receive the Celebrities’ Choice Award.
“Kelly Sutherland is a living legend, who over his incredible 50 year career became the greatest champion in Chuckwagon racing history,” says Karen Franco, Chair, Calgary Stampede Parade Committee. “Kelly is passionate about his sport and he believes in the power of community and the importance of family. We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome ‘The King’ to our Parade to join us as this year’s celebrity Parade judge.”
Born and raised in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Sutherland has captured an unprecedented 12 Calgary Stampede GMC Rangeland Derby Championships, 12 World Championships and seven Stampede aggregate titles over five decades of racing. With his signature thumbs-up salute to the crowd and his eagle feather tucked in his hat, Sutherland remains one of the greatest ambassadors the sport of Chuckwagon racing has ever seen.
“I’ve been a part of the Parade for years; I think my first time was 1969. But I’ve never been a judge for anything, so this should be a unique new experience,” says Sutherland.
The Calgary Stampede Parade starts downtown Calgary on Friday, July, 6 at 9 a.m. and is organized by a team of passionate volunteers. It is a special part of Calgary’s cultural identity and is the event which officially kicks off the 10-day celebration. The parade route will be the same as last year – and once again, admission to Stampede Park is free from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on July 6.
We invite you to get your boots, pick your spot and join the Parade that kicks off The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth! For more information, please visit CalgaryStampede.com/Parade.
