Visiting Bands committee hosts the World Association of Marching Show Bands (WAMSB)

What one thing can help people from every corner of the world - all speaking a different language and from another culture - understand each other?

What else? Music!

During this very special Centennial celebration, the Calgary Stampede will have the distinct honour of hosting the world’s best marching show bands, when the World Association of Marching Show Bands (WAMSB) World Championships begin in Calgary on July 7.

The Visiting Bands committee of the Calgary Stampede will host 17 marching show bands from around the world during the 2012 Calgary Stampede. Many of these bands have travelled a very long way and have focused a lot of time and energy to be here (from fund raising and sponsorships to thousands of hours of practice) – just imagine the expense of bringing a 100 member marching band from Thailand to Calgary!

“We’re beyond excited to be hosting this year’s WAMSB World Championships,” says Tim Neis, chair of the Calgary Stampede Visiting Bands committee. “This event is considered to be the largest and most well respected competition of its type in the world - for it to be taking place at the same time as the Stampede Centennial makes it even more special.”

For marching bands, the World Championships are not only a great way to showcase the hard work and dedication required to build a world class show band, it’s also an excellent opportunity for leading marching corps from around the world to take part in learning, cultural exchange and fellowship.

There’s a reason they dedicate so much time and effort to this event – according to the Chien Kuo High School Marching Band from Taiwan, it’s no coincidence they will be back for their fifth visit to the Calgary Stampede.

WAMSB is an international band association dedicated to promoting global communication and interaction between marching show bands. It also aims to encourage active participation in marching show bands universally, to strengthen the movement internationally and to stimulate the staging of world class band events.

“The fondest memories we have are always in Calgary,” they say on this year’s band questionnaire. “The great weather, the magnificent scenery, the wonderful event, the great people and the always supportive crowd!  That's why we keep coming back!”
