Calgary – The Calgary Stampede is proud to announce the winner of the World Association of Marching Show Bands (WAMSB) World Championships – the Calgary Stampede Showband.
Competing against over 20 bands from around the world, the 2019 WAMSB World Championships required each of the bands to compete in a variety of competitions over the weekend, including a Drumline Battle and feature performances each night. The top bands went head to head in the highly anticipated Championship Finals on July 8, with the Calgary Stampede Showband claiming the title of World Champion for the sixth time.
"It was an honour to host the World Association of Marching Show Bands World Championships at The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth," said Tim Lane, Chair, Visiting Bands Committee. “We are proud to have the Calgary Stampede Showband carry the well-deserved title of World Champion for the sixth time in 2019.”
Paying tribute to musical stylings from around the world, the WAMSB World Championships saw the talent of bands from Taiwan to the Netherlands come to compete in Calgary. The maple leaf was also well represented as three other Canadian bands showcased their skills as well.
As the winners of the WAMSB World Championships, the Calgary Stampede Showband is awarded with bragging rights as well as a championship banner. Looking ahead to next year’s competition, Calgary will hand-off the honour of hosting the 2020 WAMSB World Championships to Bangkok, Thailand.
"WAMSB International would like to thank the Visiting Bands Committee and of couse, the Calgary Stampede for their hospitality in hosting our World Championship event this year,” said Kathryn Harris, Media Manager for WAMSB International. “All of the bands who attended did a phenomenal job and we couldn't have asked for a better audience for them to play for here in Calgary."
While a great honour to host an International competition of this magnitude at the Calgary Stampede, the event would not have been possible without the volunteers that made the event a success.
“A lot of work and dedication went into putting this event together and our volunteers never missed a beat!” added Lane. “They truly demonstrated what western hospitality is all about and went above and beyond to make this competition a success. We are grateful for their passion and commitment, and proud of their successful event.”
