Calgary - It came down to the wire, but they knew they’d captured the win. As soon as the final buzzer went on Sunday it was high-fives all around for Alberta-based 14 Class - Team Cattle Penning trio Duane Daley, Rocky Davis and his son Clinton Davis.

“We were keeping track of the numbers, we knew what we needed,” the elder Davis, Rocky, said. “It’s a real big win.”

Up against 175 teams in their division, the trio captured the championship with a time of 133.6 overall over four rounds, earning a big $26,790 paycheque. The Davis’ are from Valleyview, Alberta and Daley is from just north of Camrose, Alberta.

Team cattle penning is a show of athleticism and skill as horse and rider square off against the herd instincts of cattle. The fast-paced event gives a team of three riders on horseback 60 seconds to separate three specifically identified cattle from a herd of 30 and get them into a 20’ x 24’ pen at the opposite end of the arena. Teamwork is the key to success, with all three riders working in harmony to cut out the correct cattle and drive them to the pen.

The Calgary Stampede Team Cattle Penning Championships features teams vying for championship buckles in four different classes, each determined by the skill and experience of the competitors. The win is super sweet for Daley, who said he’s been chasing this title for 27 years.

“I’ve never won Calgary before. This is the one big show I haven’t won, so this is a great feeling and couldn’t be better with two of my best friends. We’ve been penning together for 20 years,” he said, looking at his championship-winning belt buckle. “It’s one I’ve been chasing for 27 years, so it feels pretty dang good.” The packed crowd at the Nutrien Western Event Centre was behind the competitors from the start and it was a loud arena.

“It was an absolutely awesome crowd with the noise and the support. It’s the best place in North America to compete,” Clayton Davis said. His father agreed. “I love this crowd. I just love the Stampede. It’s the greatest cattle horse finals of any kind, anywhere in the world. The energy is so great in there that everybody outperforms themselves.” Father and son were thrilled to win the 2019 14 Class Championship together.

“I’m so excited to do this with dad. You can’t imagine the feeling. We’ve gone through a lot of years penning together here at the Stampede. It’s nice to win with family, you can’t top family.”

Kody Ward, Micaela Thorlakson and Cali Bookshire captured the 14 Class - Team Cattle Penning Reserve Championship with an overall time of 137.83. The Reserve win earned them $17,862 to split three ways.
