CALGARY, AB (April 9, 2026) — In a historic show of support for chuckwagon racing, Calgary’s business community shattered previous records Thursday night, committing $6.075 million at the 2026 Calgary Stampede Canvas Auction presented by Play Alberta. The record-setting total secures driver partnerships for this year’s iconic Rangeland Derby and underscores the enduring strength of the sport.

Rae Croteau Jr. set a new record with the top bid of the night at $550,000 from Bar L5 Ranch, helping drive total proceeds up $2.235 million over 2025 to reach a new all-time record.

“What stood out tonight was not just the level of investment, but the pride and passion behind it,” said Stuart O’Connor, Calgary Stampede President & Chair of the Board. “The Canvas Auction reflects the deep connection between our business community and chuckwagon racing — supporting our drivers, their teams and the future of the sport. It’s a powerful way to kick off the excitement as we head towards Stampede 2026.”

The Canvas Auction is an annual event that brings together partner companies and groups with the 27 chuckwagon drivers invited to compete at the Stampede. Successful bidders have the opportunity to showcase their brand on a driver’s chuckwagon canvas throughout Stampede 2026, while also offering guests a one-of-a-kind, behind-the-scenes experience in the chuckwagon barns.

“It’s a shocker, but it really shows the strength in Alberta, in the sport and in what the Calgary Stampede does,” said Rae Croteau Jr. of his record-setting bid. “At the end of the day, it means it’s time to win — I’m a competitive person. This kind of support sets you up for the year. It’s not just the races, it’s the off-season too — buying horses, building depth, sourcing feed — it even helps get the kids to hockey in the winter.”

For those who missed out on tonight’s bidding, individual nights of advertising may still be available, as successful bidders have the option to release nights they are unable to use. This provides even more opportunities for organizations to be part of this valued and unique experience. Anyone interested in this opportunity is encouraged to email chuckwagons@calgarystampede.com

The Canvas Auction marks the kickoff and countdown to The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, which is only 85 days away. While the Calgary Stampede is packed with excitement, there are few events as beloved as the Rangeland Derby Chuckwagon Races presented by Play Alberta. Tickets are on sale for the 2026 Rangeland Derby and Evening Show, July 3-12. For the best seats in the house, get yours today by visiting CalgaryStampede.com/tickets.
