It’s a side of agriculture that many people never have the opportunity to witness, yet it plays a vital role in the industry. Livestock auctions are where producers receive the return on months—and often years—of hard work, dedication, and investment in raising quality animals.

Each year, the Calgary Stampede hosts the International Livestock Auctioneer Championship in the Nutrien Western Event Centre. This year, it was held on July 11, where the top 10 competed for a $10,000 prize and a coveted qualifying spot at the World Livestock Auctioneer Championship.

The competition showcased a strong mix of experienced professionals and emerging talent, highlighting the continued growth and future of the auctioneering profession.

Ben Payne, Chair of the International Livestock Auctioneer Championship Committee, says success in the industry comes from years of practice, education, and refining a unique skill set.

"Auctioneering isn't easy," Payne explains. "It requires rhythm, accuracy, confidence, and the ability to communicate quickly while keeping buyers engaged."

Mentorship has long been a cornerstone of the profession. Seasoned auctioneers are committed to helping the next generation develop their skills, ensuring the industry continues to thrive.

"We certainly continue to see young people interested in becoming auctioneers," says Payne. "It's encouraging to see so many competitors reach this level of competition. Auctioneers play an incredibly important role because their job is to help sellers receive the highest possible value for their animals or products."

For those willing to work hard and continually improve their craft, auctioneering offers rewarding career opportunities across the agricultural industry.

The Calgary Stampede also invests in educating young people about the auction process. Ahead of the livestock sales, auctioneers meet with youth participating in the OH Ranch Branded Beef Youth Ambassador Program to explain how auctions work, what to expect on sale day, and the important role auctioneers play in the marketing process.

"This is another example of the Calgary Stampede bringing people together," Payne says. "It's about sharing knowledge, building connections, and creating opportunities for people to learn from one another while growing professionally."

Payne believes the auction process remains one of the fairest ways to establish value.

"An auction is where true price is discovered," he says. "It's how the market determines what an animal or product is truly worth."

Payne, owner of the Calgary Stockyards auction market in Strathmore, has served on the International Livestock Auctioneer Championship Committee for more than eight years. He says he is proud to work alongside Perlich Bros. Auction Market Ltd. in Stavely and Olds Auction Mart to ensure the event continues to provide opportunities for both rookie and veteran auctioneers to develop their careers while showcasing excellence in the profession.
