Some of the biggest stars at the Calgary Stampede don't ride in the rodeo or race around the track. They weigh nearly a tonne, stand more than six feet tall at the shoulder and have been drawing crowds to Stampede Park since 1886.
The Calgary Stampede's Heavy Horse Show is celebrating its 140th anniversary this year, showcasing the heavy horses that helped build Western Canada. Featuring breeds such as Clydesdales, Percherons, Shires and Belgian Drafts, not only is it the longest-running agricultural competition on Stampede Park, but also the oldest heavy horse show in North America, a distinction that reflects the enduring legacy of the heavy horses.
Long before tractors and modern machinery, heavy horses were essential on the Prairies, plowing fields, hauling freight and transporting goods and people across the region. Today, the animals are celebrated in competition, with exhibitors showcasing their strength, athleticism and beauty in classes ranging from single-horse carts to elaborate multi-horse hitches.
Mike Samis, Sub Vice Chair of Draft Horse Town noted the importance of showcasing these gentle giants' history at the Calgary Stampede.
“What I want people to think about is why the horse is still here. It has a place. They are not used as commonly in agriculture anymore, but it's an art and a science. It is important for us to bring the horses to the Stampede to show people the cycle. Canada was built with horsepower and we need to remember our heritage,” Samis said.
The Heavy Horse Show has long been a crowd favourite, drawing spectators with the sight of massive horses moving in perfect unison. Their sheer size, gentle temperament and the precision required to drive multi-horse hitches make the competition one of the most visually striking and enduring traditions at the Calgary Stampede.
The event is proudly presented by the Calgary Stampede Horse Show Committee and can be seen in the Nutrien Centre and Northern Lights Arena through July 6.
