It's calving season—the time of year when most ranchers are welcoming new calves to the herd. It’s one of the busiest and most important periods for any cow-calf operation, including at the Calgary Stampede OH Ranch.

“We’ve had nice weather this year and that’s always ideal for calving season,” says Deb Pigeon, Administrator at the OH Ranch, who supports all ranch operations, including animal care.

Located on the Highwood River west of Longview, AB, the OH Ranch was generously donated by Bill Siebens to the Calgary Stampede Foundation in 2012. Since then, the Calgary Stampede has stewarded OH Ranch as an authentic working ranch, founding the OH Ranch herd with 200 bred cows in 2013.

Calving season has been in full swing at the OH Ranch since early April, with 170 calves having joined the herd so far this year. This brings the total headcount to just over 300 and puts the OH Ranch team—who are working tirelessly around the clock to ensure both the cow-calf pairs and remaining pregnant heifers are healthy and doing well—at roughly two-thirds through the calving season.

This successful calving season is more than just a busy time on the range—it’s a living example of how the OH Ranch continues to embody the Western heritage and values the Calgary Stampede is committed to preserving. Through hands-on stewardship, sustainable ranching practices, and a deep respect for the land and livestock, the OH Ranch stands as a working testament to the traditions that define Alberta’s ranching legacy.
