Calgary – On July 7, Stampede Park will be filled with people as The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth kicks off for another year.“Our belief is that wearing a cowboy hat is a sign of respect – and wearing one at the Stampede should be a reminder to treat others with kindness, dignity and respect,” said Kerrie Blizard, Director of Public Safety and Environment at the Calgary Stampede. “The Stampede is where the greatest heroes and horses face off at the world’s greatest rodeo. It’s where Canada’s greatest music hits the greatest stages. But the greatest part is the guests who hat up and head down every year as the greatest versions of themselves.”The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth is not put on in isolation. The Calgary Stampede works closely with the Calgary Emergency Management Agency, City of Calgary, Calgary Police Service, Calgary Fire Department, Calgary Transit, and Alberta Health Services to make Stampede Park a safe and welcoming place for people from across the city and around the world.“The spirit of the Calgary Stampede is part of our cultural fabric,” said Sue Henry, Chief of Emergency Operations &amp; 911 for The City of Calgary. “We want residents and visitors to safely enjoy all that Stampede has to offer, and have done extensive planning with our partners behind the scenes to make it the safest event possible.”Whether waking up early to be the first in line for flapjacks or going home after a late night of line dancing at Nashville North, the CTrain will be running around the clock. 24 hour CTrain service starts the evening of July 6, and ends the morning of July 17.“We want everyone to have an enjoyable Stampede and we recognize the role of Calgary Transit in providing safe access to Stampede activities,” says Aaron Coon, Chief of the City of Calgary’s Public Vehicle Standards Division. “To support this, we’ve hired security guards, enhanced our partnership with the Calgary Police Service, and added peace officer patrols throughout the system.”Officers will be stationed at the Erlton and Victoria Park Stampede stations and at the level crossing at 17 Avenue. If someone sees something that causes concern, they can alert Calgary Transit via the Transit Watch program.“The Transit Watch program allows customers to discreetly report concerns to us by text at 74100,” says Coon. “You can also call for assistance using the help phones/buttons that are placed in strategic locations at CTrain stations, Max Purple stations and on platforms. However, if they feel that their safety is immediately threatened, customers are reminded to always call 911.”In addition to Calgary Transit, vehicle for hire services such as taxi, limousine, and Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) will allow visitors to seamlessly and safely travel to and from events. Within Calgary’s downtown core, businesses have established late night ride home stands and designated taxis stands. Drop-off/pick-up zones for TNCs and designated taxi stands will be available near Stampede Park to safely facilitate the movement of large crowds to and from venues and events.The weather in Calgary can change quickly so guests are encouraged to be prepared when they step onto Stampede Park. If an item such as sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, raincoat, or a water bottle is forgotten, they are all available for purchase to ensure a comfortable Stampede experience."We encourage everyone attending outdoor events to prioritize their health and protect themselves from excessive heat," says Dr. David Klassen, Medical Officer of Health, Alberta Health Services. "We recommend people stay hydrated; wear lightweight and breathable clothing including a hat and sunglasses; use sunscreen; rest often in shady areas; and take chances to cool off such as by using a spray bottle, wet bandanna, or fan and taking breaks in cool indoor spaces."During the course of the July celebration, Stampede Park becomes the third-largest city in Alberta and, with the support of the Calgary Police Service, becomes its own police district. Members of the Calgary Police Service will be walking around Stampede Park and stationed there from Sneak-A-Peek on July 6 to the final Sunday of Stampede on July 16. “The Calgary Police Service is ready for the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, the Calgary Stampede. We are ready to do our part to keep Stampede safe and fun for everyone,” said Superintendent Joe Brar. “We have worked closely with our partners at the City of Calgary, the Calgary Stampede, and other organizations to develop a policing plan. Bringing in police officers from across the city, we will have a highly visible presence both along the parade route and at Stampede Park. The grounds operate as a ninth police district with its own commander, radio channel, patrol officers and office. This allows us to coordinate policing throughout the park and ensure all parts of the park are well-patrolled. Protecting all Calgarians and visitors is a responsibility we take very seriously. Calgary – Get ready to hold your breath for 8 seconds straight – over and over again – as the best rodeo athletes in the world descend on GMC Stadium for Stampede 2023.New for this year’s Stampede, an expanded format will feature 30 of the top athletes in each event, broken into three hotly contested pools. The top four athletes in each pool will advance to Showdown Sunday, earning the chance to take a run at the Championship!“We’re excited to continue to grow The World's Largest Outdoor Rodeo, expanding to 30 contestants in each event for the 2023 Stampede Rodeo,” says Kristina Barnes, Manager of Agriculture &amp; Western Events for the Calgary Stampede. “The Calgary Stampede traditionally attracts the best-of-the-best when it comes to competitors, and this year we’re thrilled to showcase even more of the biggest and best names in the sport.”The Calgary Stampede is proud to announce the full lineup of athletes who have been invited to compete over 10 action packed days for a shot at becoming 2023 Calgary Stampede Champions.From multi-event superstar Stetson Wright competing in both Saddle Bronc and Bull Riding, to local sister duo Kylie and Bradi Whiteside racing for family bragging rights and big money in Barrel Racing – the field is packed with the biggest and best names in the sport of Rodeo.The Whitesides aren’t the only athletes keeping it in the family. The Saddle Bronc event sees Alberta’s Logan Hay, the 2022 Champ, once again joined in the event by brother Dawson. Stetson Wright will be hoping for an all-family final four where he can go head-to-head with his brothers Ryder and Statler, as well as their uncle Spencer Wright.Bull Riding should be a less contentious topic of conversation for the Wright family, but Stetson is in for steep competition with a field that includes seven-time World Champion, Sage Kimzey, Kimzey’s brother Trey, reigning Canadian Champion Jared Parsonage and 2022 Stampede co-Champion, Dakota Buttar.Control, attention to detail and close partnership between horse and rider will be key when Barrel Racing takes center stage. Kassie Mowry has the time to beat as the reigning Stampede Champion and current record holder for the fastest time. She’ll be joined by four-time World Champion Hailey Kinsel and Alberta native, Nancy Leischner. Leischner and her horse Trooper recently earned a spot through the 2023 Calgary Stampede Barrel Racing qualifier.A stacked slate of Steer Wrestlers includes current World Champion Tyler Waguespack and 2022 Stampede Champion Will Lummus. In the Tie Down Roping, 2022 Calgary Stampede Champion Caleb Smidt will have to be fast if he wants to make it two in a row, while three-time Stampede Champion Cory Solomon will be working towards his fourth title.Competition in the Bareback Riding doesn’t feature any sibling pairs, but it won’t lack for big rides and big scores. The talented field includes six-time World Champion Kaycee Feild, reigning World Champ Jess Pope, and 2022 Stampede Champion Rocker Steiner. Calgary – The Calgary Stampede is over the moon to announce that <a href="https://www.asc-csa.gc.ca/eng/astronauts/canadian/active/bio-jeremy-hansen.asp">Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen</a> will lead the 2023 Stampede Parade.The Stampede Parade presented by Suncor starts at 9 a.m. on Friday, July 7 and marks the official start of Stampede 2023!Hansen will become the first Canadian to venture to the moon as part of the historic <a href="https://www.asc-csa.gc.ca/eng/missions/artemis-ii/information-kit.asp">Artemis II mission</a>. It’s the first crewed mission to leave Earth’s orbit since 1972 and will pave the way for deeper space exploration, including Mars.Before he leaves Earth, Hansen will kick off The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth by leading the legendary Stampede Parade as Parade Marshal.“Jeremy Hansen is a trailblazer who exemplifies the values of the Calgary Stampede,” says Will Osler, President &amp; Chair of the Calgary Stampede Board of Directors. “His integrity and commitment to community are an inspiration, and all Calgarians, Albertans and Canadians are proud of him and everything he has accomplished. We are honoured to have Jeremy lead our Parade as an example of what you can achieve when you work hard and dream big.”“I am thrilled to be selected as the 2023 Calgary Stampede Parade Marshal and to come back to a province that holds a special place in my heart. I look forward to seeing you along the Parade route in July!” says Hansen.Looking up from the fields of Ontario as a child, Hansen always knew he wanted to become an astronaut. It’s a journey that brought him to Alberta where he completed CF-18 fighter jet training in Cold Lake before joining the Canadian Space Agency.Hansen will be joined by honourary Parade Marshal General Wayne Eyre. It’s a fitting partnership as both are dedicated to public service through their work with the Canadian Armed Forces and got their start as Cadets. Hansen joined the Air Cadets at the age of 12, while Eyre participated in the Army Cadets program when he was the same age.  Since 1914, the Calgary Stampede has celebrated, honoured, and supported the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). The strategic partnership has grown through two World Wars, wars in Korea and Afghanistan, and many peacekeeping missions. As Chief of the Defence Staff, General Eyre oversees the military’s mission to defend Canada’s values, interests and sovereignty at home and abroad.Hansen and Eyre will join the Calgary Stampede in celebrating 100 Years of Chuckwagon Racing. The world’s first Chuckwagon Race was staged at the Calgary Stampede in 1923. A true throwback to the wild west, the event was inspired by the tradition of cowboys breaking camp and racing home. While some of the rules have changed over the past 100 years, the rush has never left. To mark this milestone, a special 100 Years of Chuckwagon Racing entry will be included in the Parade.In just 23 days the streets of Calgary will be lined with people ready to watch Hansen lead the chuckwagon entry and more than 100 others, comprised of over 400 four-legged and close to 5,000 two-legged participants.The Calgary Stampede Parade begins at 9 a.m. on Friday, July 7, with the prelude beginning at 7:30 a.m. Those unable to attend in person are invited to enjoy the Parade from the comfort of their living rooms through a special broadcast by our partners at Corus Entertainment with Global Calgary broadcasting all of the excitement live.Tune in to Global Calgary on Friday, July 7, at 8:45 a.m. to watch a special live broadcast of the 2023 Calgary Stampede Parade.
